It was a beautiful cool and crisp morning today, which in any runner’s world means a great day to get out and hit the shoes to the pavement. It couldn’t have been better weather for a 5K race. And it couldn’t have been for a better cause. Today we weren’t just running for our health and well-being, we were also running for animal welfare. The race was called Run in Defense of Animals and 100% of the proceeds went to the organization In Defense of Animals.
In Defense of Animals is an international animal rights and rescue organization dedicated to protecting the rights, welfare and habitats of animals.
This event brought a whole new meaning of running to me because I knew I wasn’t just doing this for myself, but for the sentient beings of this world as well.
This race also marked a special milestone for my husband. It was his first official 5K. He’s walked them before, but this was his first time running it – and boy, was he fast! He finished in under 30 minutes (28 minutes to be exact!), and I am one proud wife. A few months ago, he was barely jogging and now he’s going full speed ahead. I’m not sure what’s in store for him next (I’m trying to talk him into doing a half marathon with me), but I’m super happy for him.
I also hit some records at this race. I had my best all-time mile (9:44) and fastest 1K (5:44). I’m not a fast runner so this was really awesome to reach these times.
It was a dog-friendly race, but we decided not to bring Dali because she’s not really that great at walking/running on her leash yet. (We did meet a trainer at the event that we’ll most likely contact to get her some private lessons.) However, Dali could tell we did something for a good cause – just look at her curled up next to the race t-shirt!
I also wanted to share pictures of our pre-race dinner because we went back to Loving Hut (all-vegan International restaurant) for the second time and it was seriously so amazing!
Overall, it’s been an awesome cruel-free weekend, and I hope everyone is enjoying themselves too!
Great cause! Congrats to both of you for participating.

Well done 🙂 I ran my first 5k this year, something I never thought I’d do before I switched to plant-based!

That is so awesome! Congrats! For me, just switching from a vegetarian to a vegan diet has made all the difference in the world. I recover quicker and I feel stronger. Good luck with any future races you run, and keep up the great work!

Thanks Alison, I feel much healthier since switching my diet as well. I was born with a foot deformity, and I never thought I’d be able to run that far. Completing a 5k is proof to doubters what a difference being vegan really makes. The only problem is, I’m addicted to running now! I’m already considering trying a 10k next year 🙂

Way to go! And you can totally do a 10K!! I’m addicted to running too. I think that’s one addiction that we all shouldn’t worry about, though 🙂
